What is Complex Training?

Complex training strings compound movements together to form one multi-repetition/multi-exercise set, or "training complex."  Proponents of complex training believe that by performing both strength and explosive in this arrangement, fast and slow twitch muscles are trained, stimulating the nervous system.



Last month I posted two complex training clips, one of me doing a warm-up and a basic complex and one of Court performing another complex.  This week I'm posting a different complex that consists of the hang clean, split jerk and front squat that I performed using an Appolon's Axle 2-inch bar.

Complex training is a great way to increase the rate of force production, which should an important component and goal of all of your clients' training programs.  All members of the population can benefit from training to increase speed and power - senior citizens, non-athletes, kids - and while strength training is important, it cannot offer the array of benefits afforded by complex training.

One of my favorite sayings is, "Life happens fast," because you need to be able to move in such a way to contend with the events encountered in everyday life.  Walking across an icy sidewalk, jumping over a puddle and running across the street are everyday activities that can be pose problems for people not able to move quickly.  Activating the nervous system and training the body to move quickly through a complete range of motion with balance and control is the best approach to take when training clients.

To be able to perform this kind of complex, your clients need to be proficient in the explosive lifts as well in all the variations of squats and dead lifts.  However, if you are doing your job as a personal trainer you are preparing your clients to execute these movements.
